Malaria mosquito biting human skin
The malaria mosquito, Anopheles balabacensis, resting on, and biting into human skin. Only the female mosquitoes bite: the piercing proboscis used for the purpose consists of barbed stylets which pierce the skin, surrounding a channel in which the secretions of the salivary glands are carried through to the tip, where the saliva mixes with the host's blood to prevent clotting and subsequent blocking of the channel.
