A female Anopheles mosquito feeds on vertebrate blood by using her proboscis (lower left) to pierce the skin. Her abdomen is swollen with this blood meal that helps her produce her eggs. If she is infected with the Plasmodium malaria parasite, her saliva will transmit this to the human. Malaria, a debilitating and intermittent fever that can kill, affects hundreds of millions in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. A. albimanus is an important vector for the transmission of malaria to humans in the tropical Americas. Magnification unknown.
