Wood wasp, SEM
Wood wasp, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This wasp, also called a horntail, is in the family Siricidae. Females lay eggs in bark, where the larvae feed on wood decayed by a specific fungus. The fungus is thought to be a symbiont of the wasp, being spread by the egg- laying females, and the partnership can cause severe damage to pine forests.
