Coloured SEM of scales on a butterfly wing
Butterfly wing. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing scales on the wing of a butterfly. It is these scales that are responsible for the magnificent colours and patterns often seen on butterflies wings. The actual wing membrane, to which the scales are attached, is colourless and transparent as glass. The scales contain either pigments of various chemical compositions or produce the coloured patterns due to an interference effect of light rays. Magnification: x90 at 35mm. x175 at 6x4.5
