Caterpillar
Hawk moth caterpillar. Macrophotograph of the head of a hawk moth caterpillar (family Sphingidae). It is feeding on the top of a plant stem here. Three of its six legs are seen clasping the side of the stem. After feeding for several days, the larvae drop off their food plant and pupate in the soil at its base. Hawk moths are powerful nocturnal moths which generally hover in front of flowers to feed on their nectar. Magnification unknown.
