Silkworms
Silkworms (Bombyx mori) held in hands. Silkworms are the caterpillars of the silk moth. The silk cocoons prepared by the caterpillars for metamorphosis are harvested and used in clothing and fabrics. A company in Oxford, UK, called Spinox, is hoping to devise a spinning process, based on the models used by silkworms and spiders, to create high performance fibres from natural or artificial proteins. Natural silk production is energy efficient, so by mimicking nature (biomimetics), future materials can be based on sustainable, non-polluting processes.
