Slug, SEM
Slug. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a slug (class Gastropoda), seen from underneath. At upper and centre right are the slug's sensory tentacles (red), which can detect smell and touch. Above these (not seen) are the optical tentacles. Below the tentacles, in the centre of the head, is the mouth, which contains a tooth-covered tongue used to rip leaves and other vegetation. At the front of the body is the mantle (yellow), which stretches over the top of the body and protects the internal organs. The slug propels itself using its large muscular foot (pink).
