Young gibbous starlet starfish
Young gibbous starlet (Asterina gibbosa) starfish, light micrograph. The dorsal (top) view (right) shows a blurred central dark mass that is the digestive sacs (pyloric caecae). The ventral (underside) view (left) has a clear central hole (the mouth) surrounded by a central pentagonal groove and tube feet over the whole surface. The tube feet are extended or retracted by a hydraulic system and are used for movement or adhesion to surfaces. For separate ventral and dorsal views, see images Z550/177 and Z150/178.
