Pufferfish
Pufferfish. Head of a pufferfish or blowfish (Arothron sp.). When threatened, the pufferfish is able to inflate itself with water taken into a distensible area of the stomach. The teeth are fused into a beak (lower left), with which it eats coral, sponges, sea urchins and starfish. The liver and ovaries of the pufferfish are particularly rich in a deadly poison called tetrodotoxin, yet despite this the fish is considered a delicacy to eat in Japan. Pufferfish are found in all tropical and temperate seas, usually in shallow water around reefs and seagrass beds. Photographed in Cabo Delgado province, Mozambique.
