Leatherback turtle
Leatherback turtle. Female leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) crawling up a beach to lay eggs. The leatherback turtle inhabits warm seas, only coming to land to lay eggs. The female uses her long fore flippers to dig a hole into which about 80 eggs will be laid. About 2 months later the young will hatch and make their way back to the water. The leatherback turtle is the largest of the living turtles, reaching over 2 metres in length. It is threatened due to the smuggling of unhatched eggs. Photographed in Rocktail Bay, South Africa.
