Emerald tree boa
Emerald tree boa, Corallus caninus, of the Amazon basin; this one was found in the lowland rain forest of Ecuador. These snakes grow to a length of about 2 m. It is one of the most beautiful of boa species having a brilliant green coloration with whitish bands; this also offers superb camouflage when it crawls about in trees or shrubs as it hunts bird and lizards. The body is compressed laterally, allowing the snake to press close to the tree branches; on the ground it is not particularly agile. This species has long fore teeth for gripping prey, and a row of heat- sensitive pits enabling it to detect prey in the dark.
