Coiled Pseudofalse coral snake, Tripurnargos sp.
Pseudofalse coral snake. View of the pseudofalse coral snake (Triparnurgos compressus). The snake's head is at lower right (orange/black). It is found in the Amazon Basin and the Caribbean island of Trinidad. This specimen is from the forests of Ecuador. The black and red ring markings are intended to give the impression that the snake is poisonous, as are similarly marked snakes such as the coral snake. This snake, however, is not poisonous. It eats lizards, birds and other small animals.
