Snake scales
Snake scales. Close-up of the scales covering the skin of a snake. Snake scales are made of keratin, the same material that is found in fingernails in humans. Scales can be keeled (ridged), granular (rough) or smooth. Most snakes use specialised scales on the underside of their body to grip surfaces as they move. A snake's skin and scales are periodically shed in one piece to reveal a new set underneath.
