Giant petrel head
Giant petrel. Bloody head of a giant petrel (Macronectes sp.). This bird feeds on krill and squid at sea, but also scavenges on dead or dying animals on land. It inhabits the Southern Ocean, nesting in Antarctica or on subantarctic islands. It may reach a length of almost a metre. Photographed on Bird Island, in the South Georgia Islands.
