Booby chick
Booby chick. Booby seabird (Sula sp.) chick allowing itself to be stroked by a boy and his father. Boobies evolved on island chains without land predators, so they lack any fear response when approached by humans. They nest on bare ground at the top or on the sides of cliffs, using gravity to help them attain full flight. They are large birds, with a wingspan in excess of 1.5 metres. Usually two chicks are born, but the larger chick generally kills the smaller within a few months of their birth. Boobies feed on fish, diving from dozens of metres up to catch them with their sharp beaks. Photographed on New Caledonia, South Pacific.
