Grey herons nesting
Grey herons (Ardea cinerea) building a nest. This large heron reaches a body length of up to one metre. It is found throughout temperate regions of Europe and Asia, though it will migrate south in the winter. It builds a bulky nest from sticks, and lays 3-4 eggs. The grey heron is found near estuaries, marshes, rivers and lakes. It feeds mostly on fish, which it spears with its long, dagger-like bill, but also eats small mammals and young birds. Photographed in Intaka Island Bird Sanctuary, South Africa.
