Male peafowl
Blue peafowl. Male blue peafowl (or peacock, Pavo cristatus) displaying its train. This large bird inhabits the tropical forests of the Indian subcontinent. The stunning array of large feathers it uses in displays are not part of its tail, but special feathers which grow from the lower back. These only grow during the breeding season, and are lost in the winter. The female (peahen) is dull coloured, and has no train. Blue peafowl eat seeds, fruit and leaves, as well as animals such as insects and even small mammals. They have long been kept as ornamental birds in gardens around the world, as they can tolerate a wide variety of climates.
