African black oystercatchers foraging
African black oystercatchers (Haematopus moquini) foraging for food for their chicks. The oystercatcher at left has a worm in its beak. This shorebird is endemic to southern Africa. It is classified as a near threatened species, with a total population estimated to number 5,000 to 6, nesting sites along beaches is the main threat to the population. Photographed in the De Hoop Nature Reserve, in the Western Cape region of South Africa.
