Sociable weaver nests
Sociable weaver nests built by a colony of sociable weaver birds (Philetairus socius) in a dead acacia tree (Acacia sp.). Up to 400 birds can inhabit a single nest, which provides shelter from the extreme temperatures of their savannah habitat. The nest is thatched (not woven) from grass, straw and twigs and can reach sizes of over 7 metres long and masses of over a tonne. Nests can be inhabited for decades by successive generations of weavers. The host tree is eventually killed by the increasing weight as the colony grows. Photographed in the Kalahari Desert, South Africa.
