Jackal attacking gazelle
Black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) attacking a Thomson's gazelle (Gazella thomsoni). This jackal inhabits grassland and open country in southern and eastern Africa. It is usually found in small packs, but may hunt alone or with its mate. This jackal typically stays with one partner for life. It will only take larger animals such as gazelles if it is with its pack or if the prey is injured or weakened. This gazelle was already wounded on one flank before the jackal attacked. The black- backed jackal may reach a length of one metre. It is an intelligent and adaptable animal, and is often found foraging around cities and towns, where it is largely nocturnal.
