Black-backed jackal drinking
Black-backed jackal (Cania mesomelas) drinking. This dog is found on the open plains of southern and eastern Africa and grows up to 90 centimetres in length. It may be found living alone, in pairs or in family groups. In areas of plentiful food it can be found in large packs. The black-backed jackal is a scavenger, with the majority of its food coming from the remains of kills made by lions or other large predators. However, it will eat anything, from rodents to insects and fruits. Photographed in the Kalahari Desert, South Africa.
