Grey seals
Collection of the North Atlantic grey seals Halichoerus grypus off the coast of Cardigan. These seals remain around rocky coasts where they bear their young in October or November. Large herds are rarely found these days and the remaining seals reproduce on remote reefs, caves or grottos where they are not pursued by humans. Recently (summer 1988) the grey seal has succumbed to a fatal disease, which is expected to kill eighty percent of the animals before it runs it course. The cause of the disease is thought to be canine distemper virus (September 1988).
