Cape fur seal
Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) underwater. This seal inhabits coastal regions around southern and south-western Africa. Although it spends much of its life at sea it rarely strays far from land. It feeds largely on fish, but also takes squid and crabs and sometimes seabirds. It hunts its prey down to depths of up to 200 metres, although the majority of hunts are spent in the upper 45 metres. Hunts can last over seven minutes. A male Cape fur seal can grow to over 2.5 metres in length and weigh up to 350 kilograms. Females are much smaller, attaining a weight of around 120 kilograms and a length of 1.8 metres.
