Manatee. West Indian manatee or sea cow (Trichechus manatus) breathing air. Manatees are well adapted for their aquatic lifestyle and can remain submerged for up to 15 minutes. They feed on fresh or saltwater plants, consuming up to 30 kilograms of vegetation per day. This species is common throughout the Caribbean in rivers, estuaries and coastal waters.
