African elephants
African elephants (Loxodonta africana) side by side. The African elephant is a social herbivore which inhabits the savannah and forests of sub- Saharan Africa. Groups are ruled by an elderly matriarch. The elephant communicates using a wide variety of low frequency sounds which can travel great distances through its environment. It is the largest land animal, reaching up to 7000 kilograms in weight in the adult male.
