Blue wildebeest
Blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), or brindled gnu, drinking after losing a horn in a fight. This animal inhabits the plains and woodlands of south-eastern Africa, grazing on fresh grass. It is a social animal, living in large herds, especially when migrating great distances to reach fresh pasture. Both sexes grow short curved horns. The blue wildebeest is an important prey animal for large carnivores such as lions. Photographed in Mkhuzi, South Africa.
