Ewer in the shape of a triton and a nereid. Johannes Lencher (c. 1573-1637) Augsburg, c 1620. silver gilt. This flagon in the form of a freestanding sculpture seems to defy the law of gravity. The stem is shaped like a dolphin with its tail curled up. Balancing on its tail fins is a triton, a sea creature with the torso of a man and the legs of a horse. A nereid - a sea nymph - sits on his back.
