Postcard commemorating the Soviet Sputnik satellites and the first Vostok spacecraft spaceflight. Sputnik 1, launched on 4th October 1957, was the world's first artificial satellite. Sputnik 2 carried the first living animal, the dog Laika, into space on the 3rd November 1957. Sputnik 3 was a research satellite that launched on the 15th May 1958.
