Glacier splitting from its parent glacier, satellite images
Satellite images comparing the Spalte glacier (top, right) before and after it broke off from its parent glacier Nioghalvfjerdsbrae (79 N, centre) glacier. The glacier in northeast Greenland broke off in late June 2020 due to warmer temperatures. The top satellite image, taken in 1986 by the Landsat 5 satellite, shows the glacier system before it split. The bottom satellite image was obtained by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 on 24 July 2020., Photo by NASA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
