Vineyard in lava rock dugouts
Vineyard in lava rock dugouts. The black volcanic soil found on Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands, is being used to grow grape vines. Semi-circular walls have been built to protect each individual vine from the hot prevailing wind. The walls also reduce wind erosion of the soil. Volcanic soil is good for growing vines as it is rich in nutrients and also absorbs dew and moisture., Photo by ASHLEY COOPER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
