X-linked ichthyosis
X-linked ichthyosis on the leg of a male teenager. This is a rare genetic skin disorder that is caused by a deficiency of the enzyme steroid sulphatase. In the absence of the enzyme the skin cells become sticky, preventing the normal shedding of skin, leading rough, dark, scaly skin. It only affects males. There is no cure and treatment is with creams and emollients to exfoliate and hydrate the skin., Photo by SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
