Inside this is the manganese dioxide cathode mix, surrounding a carbon rod electrode. Connecting the battery to a circuit initiates chemical reactions at the anode and cathode that result in electrons flowing through the carbon electrode, from positive terminal (right) to negative terminal (left). The reactions cause the zinc to dissolve, when the zinc is used the battery is flat
