Submandibular salivary gland, light micrograph
Light micrograph of a section through excretory ducts from a human submandibular, or submaxillary, salivary gland. The lumen of the ducts are white, they are lined with stratified epithelium (pink and purple). The submandibular gland is one of a pair situated under the lower jawbone. It is made up of lobules that contain secretory cells that produce the main components of saliva, including mucous to lubricate the mouth and enzymes to break down carbohydrates when chewing food.
