President Moon Jae-In selected Yoon in July 2019 to lead the national prosecution service but Yoon later clashed with president Moon government's justice ministers over a prosecution reform drive which was one of Moon's major presidential election pledges. Yoon stepped down as prosecutor general in early March 2021 and he joined the main opposition party later. South Korea's presidential election is slated for March 9, 2022.
