After graduating from the University of Cambridge in mathematics in 1910, Darwin took a postgraduate position under Ernest Rutherford at Manchester University, working alongside Niels Bohr. After the war he worked on electromagnetic theory and quantum and statistical mechanics, before becoming Director of the National Physical Laboratory in 1938. During the Second World War he worked on the Manhattan Project, coordinating US, British and Canadian efforts. He was the grandson of Charles Darwin.
