Salivary gland, light micrograph
Light micrograph through a salivary gland showing an acini (cluster) of secretory cells in longitudinal section. This is a mixed acini with both mucus-producing cells (light pink) and serous-producing cells (dark pink). The products of the cells move through the secretory duct (white, centre to top left) to the mouth. The secretions lubricate the mouth and contain enzymes that start the digestion process.
