Timber from a dike affected by shipworm, illustration
18th century Dutch illustration showing oak wood from a sea dike damaged by the common shipworm (Teredo navalis) mollusc. Shipworms can live and bore into submerged timber. During the early 1730s, shipworms caused a crisis damaging timber sea dikes, which later had to be faced with stones.
