The First United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm, Sweden, from June 5, 1972, with the participation of representatives from over 100 countries. Takeichi Oishi, Director General of the Environment Agency, gave a speech at the plenary session on the current status of Japan's environmental problems and measures to deal with them. From Japan, Shinobu Sakamoto, 15, an embryonic Minamata disease patient, Futanori Hamamoto, a Minamata disease patient, and Kanemi oil disease patients flew to the site with Jun Ui, an assistant professor at Tokyo University, Masazumi Harada, a lecturer at Kumamoto University, and others. They held press conferences, street appeals, and rallies, appealing to the world about the current state of Japan's environmental pollution and the human suffering it causes.
