The Unification Church, July 11, 2022 : A headquarter church of the Unification Church in Seoul, South Korea. The late Reverend Sun Myung Moon founded the church in Seoul in 1954. The Rev. Moon, the Korean evangelist, businessman and self-proclaimed messiah died in 2012 at the age of 92. The Unification Church confirmed that the mother of the suspect in the fatal shooting of Japan's former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had been a member, local media reported. Tetsuya Yamagami, who was arrested at the crime scene in Nara, Japan after opening fire with his handmade weapon during Abe's campaign on July 8, allegedly believed that the Japan's ex-prime minister had ties to the Unification Church, which led to his family's financial distress, according to local media.
