Graphic tourmaline, light micrograph
Thin section polarised light micrograph of a rock containing tourmaline (or turmaline) crystals in a graphic pattern. Like in the better-known graphic granite this pattern results from the simultaneous crystallization of two or more minerals in a melt at a critical temperature, the eutectic point, during cooling of that melt. Actual size is 35 x 48 mm., by DIRK WIERSMA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
