Skeletal muscle, light micrograph
Skeletal muscle, light micrograph. Longitudinal section of muscle fibres identified as skeletal, or voluntary, muscle as the fibre cytoplasm is filled with repetitive dark and light bands (sarcomeres) of contractile filaments, and the nuclei are displaced to the edge of fibres. Three nuclei appear in the centre of the fibre due to the plane of the section being deep to the surface of the muscle fibres. This emphasizes the multicellularity of a muscle fibre originally formed by fusion of hundreds or thousands of individual cells. Acrylic resin section, haematoxylin/eosin stain.
