Healthy brain, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The front of the head is at top. This is a view at the level of the eyes (white, at top). The dark area at upper centre is the sphenoid sinus. The two bright dots at centre right and left are the internal carotid arteries, with the basilar artery below them at centre. At centre are the pons, part of the brainstem that are involved in the control of sleep and arousal. At bottom is the cerebellum, which controls balance, posture and muscle coordination.
