Cartwheel Galaxy and companion galaxies, composite image
Composite image of the Cartwheel galaxy and its companion spiral galaxies. This image is composed of images taken by the James Webb Space Telescope's (JWST) Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCAm, blue, orange and yellow coloured) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI, red-coloured). The Cartwheel Galaxy is a ring galaxy located 500 million light years in the constellation Sculptor. It was formed 400 million years ago as a result of a high-speed collision between a spiral galaxy and a smaller galaxy (not visible). The Cartwheel Galaxy has a bright inner ring and an active outer ring. In between these rings, the galaxy has spokes seen as red streaks, caused by glowing, hydrocarbon-rich dust. These spokes are also seen in its companion spiral galaxy (top left). Blue dots among the dust shows stars or areas of star formation., by NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Webb ERO Production Team/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
