Tokyo Station red brick station building opens, recreating the appearance of the original building.
October 1, 2012, Tokyo, Japan - The newly refurbished red-brick building of Tokyo station stands magnificent upon the completion of its 50 billion yen restoration work to its original appearance on Monday, October 1, 2012.
A ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of the station's symbolic structure with the attendance of Emperor Akihito was canceled because of unexpected passing of a typhoon on the previous night.Originally built in 1914, the building survived the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 but was heavily damaged by U.S. air raids shortly before the end of World War II. After five and a half years of preservation and restoration efforts, the station on the Marunouchi side reopened just two years shy of the railway station's centennial.
