Diverse disciples, Five hundred arhats, Atago Nenbutsu-ji Temple / 1998
At Otagi Nenbutsuji temple in Sagano, Kyoto, 1,200 stone rakan, or statues of Buddha's disciples, wear a host of different expressions. The statues were carved by worshipers, with each taking from one to two weeks to make. The collection was completed in 1991 after 10 years of work.
