Dactylioceras sp. ammonite fossil
Dactylioceras sp. ammonite fossil found in Germany, dating from the Toarcian age (180 million years). Ammonites are extinct marine animals which lived between 380 and 65 million years ago. They are distantly related to the modern-day nautilus. They lived in coastal waters and inland seas. The animal lived in the last chamber of its coiled shell. The hole in the shell, located opposite the hole from which the ammonite's head emerged, is characteristic of an attack by a squid. In some outcrops, this trace of predation is observed on 20 percent of the ammonites. Collection Jean-Philippe et Francois-Xavier Blouet, paleontologists., by PASCAL GOETGHELUCK/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
