Stylonychia ciliate, light micrograph
Phase contrast light micrograph of Stylonychia sp. ciliate. This ciliate protozoan inhabits freshwater and moist soil, where it feeds mainly on bacteria and other small micro-organisms. It moves by beating its cilia, hair-like extensions on its body. Those around its mouth are also used to waft prey into the mouth.
