Illustration of the base of the skull showing the large veins (blue) of the transverse, sigmoid, and petrosal sinuses. Forward of the central pituitary are the cut internal carotid arteries entering the skull through the carotid canals. Inferiorly are the cut vertebral arteries passing through the foramen magnum.
