Neck and face, illustration. Passing vertically is the common carotid artery (red) and its internal and external branches. Closely associated to its left is the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X). Further left are four cervical nerves that arise from the spinal cord. Also shown is the lingual nerve (cranial nerve V) supplying the tongue and sublingual glands, and below the chin the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII).
