^BEast-to-West flight crew and designer ^bstanding in front of the Southern Cross plane, a Fokker trimotor. At 4am on June 24 1930, four men set out from Portmarnock Beach, Ireland, in a bid to cross the Atlantic. They touched down 32 hours later at Harbour Grace in Newfoundland, USA, triumphant. They then flew to Oakland, California, USA, which completed the pilot's personal circumnavigation of the globe. From left: radio operator Charles S. W.
